SAIL 2030 Amsterdam: Experience the Tall Ships from Your Own Private Boat
What is SAIL 2030?
SAIL Amsterdam is one of Europe's largest free maritime events, drawing millions of visitors to the IJ harbour and surrounding waterways. Originally planned for 2025, the event has been rescheduled to 2030. For five days, Amsterdam transforms into a floating stage of tall ships, historic sailing vessels, naval frigates, and maritime demonstrations. The harbour fills with hundreds of ships, and the city's waterways become part of the spectacle.
For anyone planning a corporate event, private celebration, or group outing during SAIL 2030, the water itself is where the action happens. A private boat puts your group in the middle of it all, sailing alongside the tall ships rather than watching from behind a crowd on the quay.
Why Book a Private Boat for SAIL 2030?
The shores along the IJ get packed during SAIL. Viewing spots fill up hours in advance, food stalls have long queues, and moving between locations on foot is slow. On a private boat, your group has an unobstructed sightline to the tall ships and naval vessels. You can reposition throughout the day, following the Sail-in parade or anchoring near a ship that catches your eye.
A boat also turns the event into a complete experience. Combine the maritime spectacle with drinks, a full dinner, or a reception for your team or guests. Your group stays together in comfort, with food and drinks on board, a toilet, and shelter if the weather turns.
SAIL 2030 at Night
SAIL is not just a daytime event. After sunset, the tall ships light up and the IJ harbour takes on a different character. Illuminated masts reflect off the water, and the city skyline provides a dramatic backdrop. An evening cruise during SAIL lets your group enjoy the ships in a quieter, more atmospheric setting. This is a popular option for dinner cruises and corporate hospitality.

Booking a boat for SAIL 2030 follows a clear process from start to finish.
1 - Enquiry and consultation
You contact Amsterdam Boats with your group size, preferred date, and type of event (drinks, dinner, corporate). Your account manager suggests suitable boats and packages.
2 - Boat selection and booking
The skipper welcomes you and briefly explains what to expect. Once everyone is there, the boat casts off. The sounds of the city fade as you move onto the water.
3 - Catering and route planning
Based on your preferences, you choose a boat and confirm your booking. During SAIL, boats fill up months in advance, so early booking secures the widest choice.
4 - Boarding
On the day, your group boards at a central Amsterdam jetty. The crew welcomes you, explains the route, and gets drinks flowing before departure.
5 - The SAIL cruise
Your boat navigates the SAIL route through the IJ harbour and surrounding waterways. The captain positions the boat for close-up views of the tall ships, naval vessels, and maritime displays. Food and drinks are served throughout.
6 - Return and disembark
The boat returns to the boarding point at the agreed time. Your account manager follows up to make sure everything met expectations.
Frequently asked questions
SAIL 2030 is expected to take place in August 2030 in the IJ harbour and surrounding waterways of Amsterdam. The exact dates will be confirmed by the SAIL organisation. The event was originally scheduled for 2025 and has been moved to 2030.
Boats for SAIL sell out quickly, especially larger vessels and popular time slots (the Sail-in parade and evening cruises). We recommend booking at least six to twelve months before the event. Early enquiries give you the widest choice of boats and dates.
This depends on the boat. Some vessels allow you to bring your own catering, while others work exclusively with on-board kitchens or selected caterers. Your account manager will clarify the options for your chosen boat and help arrange catering that fits your budget.
All our larger salon boats have enclosed, heated cabins as well as open-air deck space. Your cruise goes ahead in rain or wind. In the rare case of a severe weather warning that affects shipping on the IJ, your account manager will contact you to discuss rescheduling or an adjusted route.
