A Canal Cruise in Amsterdam is a must. Many people have booked a canal cruise before you and many will do so after you. In total 3,5 million people book some sort of canal cruise in Amsterdam every year. For a city with less then 1 million inhabitants, that is a lot of canal cruises! Amsterdam Canal Cruises is the number one tourist attraction in the Netherlands and one of the biggest in Europe.
Amsterdam has known and seen canal cruises for many centuries. The first canal cruise in Amsterdam dates back 1621 when Queen Elisabeth Stuart of Bohemia visited the city by boat in a large, colourful and cheerful canal cruise parade. In those days canal cruises where not commercial. Today that has changed. There are around 200 registered canal cruise boats, ranging from a smaller boat to the larger vessels and canal busses. The larger canal cruise operators are located close to the Leidseplein Rijksmuseum and central station.
Prices for a typical, standard canal cruise on one of the larger canal boats start at around 7,50 euro. Obviously, one can also find more complicated, sophisticated and luxurious canal cruises. All famous visitors to Amsterdam have booked a canal cruise. Winston Churchill was very enthousiastic about his cruise and many can still remember the canal cruise the Beatles took when they visited Amsterdam. Other famous, more recent canal cruise clients include Nelson Mandela, Celine Dion, Kate Moss, the Rolling Stones and Robby Williams.
Many of the canal cruises are some how larger and offer fixed locations to get on and off. Some of the other canal cruises in Amsterdam are organised by classical canal cruise boats that often date back to the early 1900's and used to be owned by rich and famous former Amsterdam citizens.
An Amsterdam canal cruise is the perfect way to explore Amsterdam and the view from the water is completely different from the street view.
