A Canal Cruise in Amsterdam is a must. Many people have booked a canal cruise before you and many will do so after you. In total 3,5 million people book some sort of canal cruise in Amsterdam every year. For a city with less then 1 million inhabitants, that is a lot of canal cruises! Amsterdam Canal Cruises is the number one tourist attraction in the Netherlands and one of the biggest in Europe.
Amsterdam has known and seen canal cruises for many centuries. The first canal cruise in Amsterdam dates back 1621 when Queen Elisabeth Stuart of Bohemia visited the city by boat in a large, colourful and cheerful canal cruise parade. In those days canal cruises where not commercial. Today that has changed. There are around 200 registered canal cruise boats, ranging from a smaller boat to the larger vessels and canal busses. The larger canal cruise operators are located close to the Leidseplein Rijksmuseum and central station.
Prices for a typical, standard canal cruise on one of the larger canal boats start at around 7,50 euro. Obviously, one can also find more complicated, sophisticated and luxurious canal cruises. All famous visitors to Amsterdam have booked a canal cruise.
